How to Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion

Three Methods: Readying Yourself for the Reunion Avoiding the Bully Confronting the Bully Community Q&A

Many people get bullied in high school. Seeing your former bullies as an adult can be tough. Prepare yourself by adopting the right attitude before attending your high school reunion. Decide whether you want to talk to your former bully or just avoid them. Whatever your choice, consider it carefully and try to have a good time at your high school reunion.

Steps

1

Readying Yourself for the Reunion

  1. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 1

    1
Plan ahead. [1] Contact the reunion committee — the group that organized the reunion — and have them email you a full list of everyone who will be attending. If the bully’s name is on it and you really don’t want to see them, there is no shame in not attending.

    • However, you should carefully weigh whether avoiding a former bully is more important than the chance to meet other alumni from your graduating class.
    • When you contact the organizing committee, thank them for their hard work in putting the reunion together.

    2
Think about what you have to gain by confronting the bully. [2] If you lived each day of your high school career in fear of going to school because of a bully, you might feel an increased sense of agency and power by finally confronting this demon from your past. However, speaking with your bully might also be anti-climatic, or lead to new feelings of frustration. Before confronting your former bully, be sure that it’s what you really want.

    • Seeing your personal bully again can help you contextualize both your life and the bully’s. For instance, if you see your bully has accomplished very little of value since high school, while you have accomplished a great deal, you will feel proud of yourself and take pleasure in how pitiful the bully has become.
    • If your bully has changed or is apologetic, you might be able to put the past behind you. [3]
  3. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 3

    3
Stay grounded. Talking to or even seeing your former bully might inspire feelings of anger, sadness, embarrassment, or emotional pain. Prepare against these feelings before heading to your high school reunion by getting in the right frame of mind.

    • Use one positive word to describe your own attitude and behavior, and repeat it over and over again like a mantra. [4]
    • For instance, you might repeat “compassion” or “peaceful” over and over and picture yourself in a beautiful, green meadow by a lake. This way, you will remain calm and won’t become agitated or angry when you see the bully again, even if you only see him or her from a distance.
    • You could also take a big breath in, then let it out slowly through your mouth over the course of five or six seconds. Do this several times to calm your mind and reduce your heart rate.
  4. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 4

    4
Remember you’re not in high school anymore. Seeing your bully again may make you feel like you are back in high school again. Try to remind yourself that both you and your bully have gone through many changes. Even if it has only been five years since your high school graduation, you and your bully may have both had a series of jobs, relationships, and other important experiences that shaped and changed you.

    • Your bully might no longer be the same person. The things your bully has experienced might have transformed them into a totally different person.
    • Evaluate your current stance on moral and life issues, your values, and your interpersonal relationships. How have you changed since high school? Would your current self even be bullied? Would your current self allow it?
  5. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 5

    5
Consider how you’ve overcome (or not overcome) the bullying. Bullying has many near and long-term impacts. [5] [6] Take time to think about how being bullied has or hasn’t impacted your life. For instance, you might:

    • engage in bullying yourself
    • be less healthy than other people your age
    • have clinical depression
    • take up smoking
    • feel angry
    • become socially withdrawn

2

Avoiding the Bully

  1. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 6

    1
Connect with friends and family. If you’re preoccupied with unpleasant memories, you won’t have fun at the reunion. Instead, eat, mingle, and act normally. Cherish the opportunity you have to reconnect with old friends and classmates. [7] Instead of focusing on the former bully, focus on the good people whose company you enjoy.

  2. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 7

    2
Acknowledge that avoiding a former bully doesn’t make you weak. It simply means you realize that they are not worth your time and energy. [8] Don’t let your pride or emotions push you to confront the former bully unnecessarily.

    • Also keep in mind that your bully will likely not engage with you either, so not approaching your bully is nothing to worry about. Focus on reconnecting with the people you enjoyed spending time with in high school and who treated you with respect.
  3. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 8

    3
Don’t feel obligated to engage with former bullies. [9] Some wounds never heal. If your former high school bully reaches out to you either before or during the reunion, you are under no obligation to speak with them. [10] You don’t owe them anything, and you should not be made to feel that you do.

    • If a former bully tries to engage you in conversation — even pleasant conversation — you are perfectly within your right to excuse yourself.
    • You can be direct or indirect when excusing yourself. You might simply go get something to drink, or you could be direct with the former bully and say what’s on your mind.
    • For instance, you might say, “I’m not really interested in speaking with you because you were rotten to me when I was growing up. Good day.” Turn on your heel and walk away.
  4. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 9

    4
Observe the former bully. Are they still a loudmouthed jerk? Or have they softened with age? [11] Watch how they behave from afar.

    • Do they talk pleasantly with everyone? Or do they exclusively stick with their old clique? If they’re talking with everyone, they might be less combative and mean-spirited than they were back in high school.
    • If you can, try to pick up on a bit of their conversation as well to figure out if they’ve changed for the better.
    • If you think they are reformed, consider talking to them about your feelings.
    • If they seem to be unchanged and obnoxious, stay away from them.
  5. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 10

    5
Move on with your life. [12] Just seeing your bully, whether he/she is well-adjusted and pleasant or still a jerk, may give you a sort of catharsis. Even if you don’t speak to your former bully, seeing them might make it easier to accept that the past is past. After the reunion, work to address any lingering impacts the bullying may have had on you.

3

Confronting the Bully

  1. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 11

    1
Address their bullying. [13] The impact of bullying on teens and adolescents can last a lifetime. Sometimes telling the former bully how you felt growing up in high school and/or how you still feel can help you heal old wounds.

    • Be honest when expressing yourself to the bully. This might be your only chance to tell them exactly what you think. Let them know that what they said and did to you was hurtful and wrong.
    • If you choose to unburden yourself to the former bully, don’t expect them to care. While you might hope that the former bully will repent and ask forgiveness, they might be totally unreformed. You might hear them say that the events that made such an impact on you were “No big deal” or “A long time ago.”
  2. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 12

    2
Don’t try to hurt the bully. Be mature when talking to them. Don’t let your former bully’s bad behavior become a license for you to sink to their level. Don’t hurl insults their way, or criticize the way they dress. It might feel good in the moment, but you’ll be disappointed in yourself later. [14]

    • Control your nonverbal behavior, too. [15] Don’t roll your eyes or make a mean face at the former bully.
  3. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 13

    3
Accept the former bully’s apology. [16] In the best case scenario, your former bully will reflect on what you’ve said and realize how wrong they were. As hard as it may be, you should accept their apology gracefully. [17] Accepting an apology, especially from someone who caused you significant emotional and/or physical pain, shows strength of character.

    • Do not accept insincere apologies. If the bully laughingly says “Sorry about that one time I broke your jaw and left you in the hospital for two weeks,” let the bully know that what they did was very wrong and that sort of apology isn’t good enough. Say, “I see you’re still the same. Too bad.” Walk away and don’t engage with them further.
  4. Image titled Deal with Former Bullies at a High School Reunion Step 14

    4
Leave if you feel uncomfortable. [18] If you’re unhappy at your class reunion because of the presence or behavior of the former bully, you don’t need to stay. Do what’s right for you. Bid a polite farewell to friends and acquaintances and make your exit.

    • Hopefully your bully has matured enough not to physically confront you, but be aware that they might be just as immature now as they were back in high school, especially if alcohol is involved. If they try to get physical with you, don’t provoke them. Just get out of there and contact the authorities.

      I’m just a quiet girl

I had suffered from bullying when I was in elementary for being introverted; my classmates disrespect me, made fun of me, and called me names. Remembering my days of elementary school gave me horrible memories. In the beginning, they made me feel anxious and nervous. I was afraid of asking help from adults because I knew that it doesn’t stop the bullies from hurting me. I decided to ignore people who wanted to rouse a reaction out of me. They judge me for wearing my older sister’s old clothes and not spending money on unnecessary things. Despite the circumstances, I still managed to smile at my classmates who bullied me back in elementary. Being bullied, taught me to choose friends who like or love me for who I truly am, not by the mask I put on to just fit in with the group or by my social class. I learned that we don’t need to take vengeance on the bullies because payback is only for the unsophisticated and it doesn’t lead to a resolution. Everyone deserves to be respected, regardless of sex, race, social class, and physical appearance. No matter how good you are, people will always criticize you; learn how to distinguish between positive criticism and negative criticism. If you don’t feel comfortable depending on your parents, you can ask for guidance from your parents or teacher instead. You are awesome and extraordinary, that’s why bullies are jealous of you. 🙂

I don’t even know if my email will be shown or not but whatever. It’s a Tuesday night, I have a lot to do and I just suddenly got into this mood wherein I feel like the world hates me. I haven’t been bullied but I felt like I was because students at my school see me as a weirdo. Like… I just don’t have a pretty face that people want to look at… I just don’t have a dream body to show off with wonderful clothes and all that but I’m just like everyone else but I don’t think they see it that way. I suddenly don’t have he rights to be what I want to be— to express what I want to say and to do what I want to do because I am not pretty. Yesterday was the worst I felt because on a dance practice, we were asked to have a slight body contact… not even “body”… like… hands… we were— asked to hold hands— everybody was asked to hold hands. I mean if I were to ask myself I’m not unhygienic but their reaction as to holding my hands were as if I was a piece of rotten garbage which resulted to me feeling like it… was I really that gross and ugly? Sometimes I think to myself, are my “friends” just here because they pity me? Because if I didn’t have them I would have no one? Whenever I tell them things they don’t seem interested but they act like they do. I hate it. I hate life. Family problems on the other hand are worse but Imma let them pass because I could deal with them myself. Just the thought of people being grossed out by me is what made my already 0 confidence level go from that to the negatives, thanks people from my expensive unprofessional school with horrible students and teachers who lack both discipline and good attitude!

Hi, I’m Z. I’m 16 years old.  At school, everyone would alienate me, they won’t let me be friends with them. And if I thought they were my friends, they were just faking it. I really don’t understand why they hate so much. Is it because I’m related to the school’s founder? Or that I smelled bad? Or that I lived the farthest from the school? Or that my family isn’t that rich compared to theirs? I just don’t understand. I endured all the bullying, sure it was hard at first hearing someone say that no one likes me in a group chat or they’d publicly talk bad things about me online, I endured it all and never told my parents. I don’t know why but I never had the confidence to tell them about my problems. I had so much trouble fitting in and trying so hard to be liked by everyone. No one in the school liked me, even my older sister was embarrassed that I was her sister. After 4 long years of enduring of being bullied, I tried opening up my problems to my parents. I thought they were going to comfort me, I thought they were going to give me advice, but I was wrong. They yelled at me and told me that it’s my fault as to why they don’t like me, and that I give them a bad vibe. During that time, all I was thinking was: when and where will I ever be safe to be open about how I feel? I remember when I had a problem way before my confrontation with them, they told me that they are always there to listen to my problems whenever I am in need of someone to talk to. But boy was I wrong.

      The Fat Girl

I was a happy child. I had a good family and life. Until I entered elementary school. I was call slow, fat, stupid, ugly, and dumb. Boys would pretend to like me so they can just make their friends laugh. Girls would write bad letters to me on how I looked. I was so big and dark skinned. When they kept saying,” I was just playing with you.” It made things worse. One guy told me “I wish you was dead.” When I was in high school, I was in a terrible car accident. I fell in a nine foot ditch. I was left for dead. When I enter college, one guy told me to lose 50-75lbs in order to be more beautiful. And guys would go out with me. I would cry day and night. I hated myself. I just want to feel love and not be judged. Sometimes, I wish I was dead and my nightmares would be over!!!!!

      Getting bullied
      August 10, 2018

Hi. I’m 12 years old. I’m not a teenager as you can see. I get bullied at school sometimes, but the ones that bully me the most are my friends and my best friend. Because of that I hurt myself. My best friend knows that but she still bullies me. In fact when she found out she started bullying me more. Well it’s not the first time that happened to me. My best friend in kindergarden would call me pregnant because I had a belly. I started thinking of suicidal thoughts when I was 9 years old. And every year got worse for me. Summer is especialy hard because I don’t go to school. I don’t like to go to school but my classmates are there for me so i feel happy. Drawing and listening to music just makes go away from reality and into another universe where it’s calm so that’s why I spend a lot of time drawing in my free time. I still get bullied but I’m happy because I have my classmates there for me.

Hi my name is R and I’m 13 years old,
My life has was really difficult I got bullied everyday and I have autism. People would say horrible stuff too me people called me ugly, fat, sket, clapped, slag, tissues,Witch, plastic and more. I got beaten up a few times people threatened me all the time. People have even waited outside of school to bully me they also bullied me on social media. I told my mum,dad and teachers my mum and dad went to the school loads of times to get the teachers to have a word with the people that were bullying me. The teachers didn’t do anything I started feeling depressed, uncomfortable, isolated, alone and scared I started self harming also I didn’t come into school sometimes because I was upset and scared to go in. I was getting worser and worser. eventually my mum and dad decided to put me In a different school. I’m much happier in my new school I’ve blocked all of the bully’s. My self esteem is very low still and I don’t like going out by myself. But I will get there. It will soon be okay believe in yourself don’t let anyone bring you down they are jealous of you. Make sure you tell someone if people are being horrible to you xx

“Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.”(LIE)

I have been bullyed my whole time through elementary and JR. High school, now going to be High school. I have dealt with many different types,of bullying. I have been threatened about being hit, stabbed, and even killed. I have been pushed around many times where I even thought about taking my life… Loseing everything I had, just because of them. The bullies. I am girl. The only thing that made me different from one is that I am a tom boy… I am not one of the popular kids that have 5 pounds of make up on… I show my true self. I am always nice to others. I just have had no friends… Or true friends… They always picked on me and made me feel an inch high… I have been kicked and slapped my other boys and girls but I do not hit back… I never would think of myself that way. Now I am going to go to high school where more await for me… It dose not help that I am short and slightly overweight. So now I deal with more to come that just being threatened.. I may be in one of the situations I stated above… I would never hurt anyone… I have never bullied since I know what it feels like. When I stand up for others, it makes me get bullied more. I do not know what to do… I am feeling super nervous… They say “stick and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me” but…. This is not true. It hurts like a pin staving through the heart. My name is D. I have never bullied, or hurt anyone. I just hope I will have better years in high school than my other years…

The day where I was enough was enough

I’m 15 and I’ve been a victim of cyber bullying for a while now with threatening comments on instagram and text messagesit feels like I can’t escape from it. You are supposed to feel safe at home right well with this all happening I don’t feel safe anywhere. I try to be mindful of bullying cases around the world on the news but sometimes it is to hard to handle and times like this is when I just start crying.
I had a cousin who took her own life over cyber bullying and that terrifies me. It has been 4 months since my cousin took her own life and I still haven’t gotten over it. You start to feel like the world is going to revolve around the media. In Australia around 8 young kids attempt to take their life and it was a success every week, we need to put a stop to it before it gets worst. Life is pain but you just have to live through the pain.
The bullying has gotten really bad to the point where I had to start to see the psychologist. They’ve been saying hurtful comments like, nobody likes you, you are so dum go to hell, life would be better without you, Your so disgusting and ugly go and die, So happy we got rid of your cousin she was nobody and so are you, Kill yourself, Fake, Loser, You don’t belong here you belong in hell, Get a life, Your disgusting inside and out what a waste of skin you are, Who do you think you are ugly face. This is just some of the hurtful words. This has impacted my life and stayed with me, there is no escape like bullying at school. These messages haunt me and I’m losing sleep cause of it.
      WORDS HURT!

The present house was built largely in the 1720s, on the site of an older house. The foundations of the older house can be seen, down the slope from the present house. The owner transformed a large pond into an extensive ornamental lake to the west of the house in 1745, using an army of soldiers awaiting marching orders to fight the Scottish rebellion.

Two elaborate wooden summer houses were erected to the east of the house in 1750. One of these still survives. The cedar trees and beech walk were planted in 1790. At this time the house was extended and the original drive, which rounded the lake and led out to the London Road by Brasted, was abandoned in favour of a private road leading straight down to the village of Sundridge. In 1815 French prisoners of war carved out the ornamental caves, grottos and the house at the bottom of the garden, beech wood.

In 1907 Mr Robert Mond bought the property and extended it. The typical Victorian shrubberies, rockeries and grottos were embellished with formal gardens near the house, and walkways lined with beech and yew. Many of the fine specimen trees (which have suffered minimal storm damage), the copper beech, weeping beech and monkey puzzles were also planted at this time. A Grecian temple was bought and erected in the largely 18th century garden, a rock garden was created and many flowering shrubs planted.

The house has been a Girls’ boarding school since World War 2. It was a private house until the early-1920s. It was then used as a convent until occupied by the American Army during World War 2.

When the house became a convent in the 1920s the estate was split up, the bulk of the land including the lake being sold off. It is now owned by the Marley Company. The ice cave was blocked off for safety reasons by the American Army during World War 2.

      HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT

Lt-Col John Campbell (1693-1770), later fourth Duke of Argyll, bought Combe Bank from William Ash in 1720 and the following year commissioned Roger Morris to build a new mansion. The family had close links with the Burlington Circle, Alexander Pope, and William Kent. Work on the gardens presumably stems from this time although most of the design dates from the 1740s. The fourth Duke’s eldest son, also John, became Baron Sundridge of Combe Bank in 1766, eventually succeeding as Duke of Argyll on his father’s death in 1770. The new Earl took up residence at the family home, Inverary Castle, and Combe Bank was given to the fourth Duke’s third son, Frederick. John Adam (1721-92) was commissioned between 1775 and 1777 to prepare plans for altering the house, but these were not executed until the second half of the 19th century. Lord Frederick did however make some alterations to the house in the early years of the 19th century. He died in 1816 without a male heir and his daughter sold the estate to William Manning who, in 1830, became bankrupt and was forced to sell Combe Bank. It was purchased by Arthur Chichester who became first Lord Templemore in 1831. Chichester died in 1837 and his son only four years later, which led to the estate being put back on the market. It was purchased in 1845 by the Rev Augustus Clayton who lived at Combe Bank until 1864 when he sold it to William Spottiswode, President of the Royal Society. During his ownership some of John Adam’s designs for internal decorations to the house were carried out. Although Spottiswode undertook some minor plantings, the structure of the grounds remained little changed from the mid-18th century (Land Use Consultants 1990). In 1883 William Spottiswode died and for a while his son Hugh tenanted Combe Bank before selling it in 1906 to Ludwig Mond, a leading chemical industrialist. Mond, and his son Robert who inherited in 1909, carried out extensive alterations to the gardens, building a rockery and a formal rose garden. Following the First World War Robert Mond put Combe Bank up for auction in 1921, divided into lots. The house and gardens did not find a buyer in the auction but in 1924 were purchased by the Society of the Holy Jesus Christ who founded Combe Bank School for Girls. The site suffered considerable storm damage in the late 20th century and remains (2001) in divided ownership.

Uni Research CIPR’s section for microbiology has almost 30 years of experience isolating and characterising microorganisms from oil reservoirs and other extreme environments. Besides applying classic culturing techniques, bioassays and molecular community studies, we construct model systems of oil reservoirs and oil installations where we study the microbial processes involved in enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), reservoir souring, nitrate treatment and microbial influence coorosion(MIC) – and other industrial petroleum processes that are influenced by microorganisms.
