Net registrations blamed for college festival stampede

Registrations for the pro nite at Bhavan’s College were done online, which led to the stampede on Wednesday night.

      | TNN | Updated: Dec 12, 2014, 05:06 IST

MUMBAI: Registrations for the pro nite at Bhavan’s College were done online, which led to the stampede on Wednesday night. The college on Thursday claimed that entry passes for the event were given away by the NGO partner of the O2 festival, the Youth.
As several registrations were done online the college was not aware that the numbers would go out of control, but students said the educational institute should have monitored the registration process. The college now plans not to hold events such as the War of DJs in future.

Exact figures were not available, but sources said between 10 and 15 persons were injured and two of them had to be hospitalized.

The college said one of the injured individuals was not a student. The injured people were taken to Kokilaben and Cooper hospitals.

The police said the two hospitalized persons were a woman college student, who was not grievously injured, and her would-be sister-in-law, who was in the ICU.

College principal V I Katchhi said the student, an asthma patient, suffered some injuries and felt suffocated. “She was discharged this morning,” the principal said. The college claimed that 15,000 students were on the college grounds and over 5,000 were shut outside.

“Those outside may or may not have had passes,” the principal said. “The unruly crowd tried to force itself in. As the process was done online, it was difficult to keep track of numbers.”

Sources from the college claimed drug addicts from the neighbourhood entered the campus.A drugs peddler near Azad Maidan Metro Station was arrested when a girl from another college came to make a purchase and was quielty followed by her mother, but the police said the matter was not related to Bhavan’s College.
