    Middle Level Essay

The SSAT Middle Level Essay requires students to write a short story in twenty-five minutes. Two sentences will be provided, and students are asked to select the sentence they find most interesting and use it as the first sentence of a short story. Here are some tips to think about when working on the essay:

    • Follow the instructions. Make sure the sentence provided by the SSAT is the first sentence of your story.
    • Budget your time! Make sure to save time at the end to edit for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
    • Decide what point of view you will use and stick to it! Sometimes the point of view is established by the sentence provided:
                – First person uses “I”: “I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
                – Third person uses “he”, “she”, “it”, “they”: “He couldn’t believe his eyes.”
    • Decide what tense you will use for your story and stick to it! Sometimes the tense is established by the sentence provided:
                – Past tense: I saw, I went, I did.
                – Present tense (rarer and more difficult to maintain): I see, I go, I do.
    • In your first paragraph, establish the setting of your story using vivid description involving sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound.
    • In your first paragraph, establish the conflict.
                – Conflict is the problem, difficulty, or challenge facing the main character.
    • Every story should have a clear structure: beginning, middle, and end (in other words, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion)
    • Here’s a list of essay topics with which to practice. You have twenty-five minutes to complete each writing sample.

    Upper Level Essay

The SSAT Upper Level Essay requires students to write either a short story or an essay in twenty-five minutes. The essay topics tend to be broad and varied. In some cases, you will be asked to take a side on an issue (in other words, you will be asked to write a persuasive essay). In some cases, you will be asked to offer a description or show cause and effect (in other words, you will be asked to write an expository essay). Two sentences will be provided, and students are asked to select the sentence they find most interesting and use it as the basis for an essay or a story.

    General Tips

    • Make sure your writing appropriately responds to the topic. Does the essay topic require you to take a position on an issue (persuasive essay)? Does it ask you to show cause and effect (expository essay)? Does the topic ask you describe or characterize some subject or topic (expository essay)? Are you being asked to tell a story (creative writing)?
    • If you are writing an essay, make sure you have a clear introductory paragraph, two or three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. If you are writing a story, make sure your short story has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
    • Budget your time! Make sure to save time at the end to edit for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

    Creative Writing Tips

    • Decide what point of view you will use and stick to it! Sometimes the point of view is established by the sentence provided:
               – First person uses “I”: “I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
               – Third person uses “he”, “she”, “it”, “they”: “He couldn’t believe his eyes.”
    • Decide what tense you will use for your story and stick to it! Sometimes the tense is established by the sentence provided:
                – Past tense: I saw, I went, I did.
                – Present tense (rarer and more difficult to maintain): I see, I go, I do.
    • Establish the setting of your story using vivid description involving sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound.
    • In your first paragraph, establish the conflict.
                – Conflict is the problem, difficulty, or challenge facing the main character.
    • Every story should have a clear beginning, middle, and end (in other words, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion).

    Persuasive Essay Tips:

    • Persuasive writing requires you to argue for or against an idea; to take a side on an issue; to urge the reader to behave a certain way; or to urge the reader to agree to a certain position on an issue.
    • Take a side. Don’t sit on the fence.
    • Use concrete examples from history, literature, current events, or personal experience to support your position.

Right before you conclude your essay, consider writing a counterargument:
              – In a counterargument, you present an opposing view and then show why it is not as strong as the view you have been presenting.
              – Imagine an intelligent skeptic reading your essay.

    Expository Writing

    • If you are asked to define something, provide your definition or explanation and then support your definition or explanation with details or examples from history, literature, current events, or personal experience.
    • If you are asked to offer a description, think of two or three important qualities that you would like to discuss.
                – Make sure you choose a subject about which you are familiar.
                – Be as detailed as possible.
    • When writing to establish cause and effect, establish the cause, define the effects, and offer solutions or explanations for why this is so.

You have twenty-five minutes to complete each writing sample. Here’s a list of essay topics with which to practice:

Schools would like to get to know you better through an essay or story using one of the two topics below. Please select a topic you find most interesting and fill in the circle next to the topic you choose.

    Short Essay Topics:

Topic: He would have to try again.

Topic: It was the biggest challenge she would have to face.

Topic: Which are more important, arts and music or sports and athletics?

Topic: What is the most important issue facing the world today and what would you do to contribute to solving this issue?

Writing an essay often seems to be a dreaded task among students. Whether the essay is for a scholarship , a class, or maybe even a contest, many students often find the task overwhelming. While an essay is a large project, there are many steps a student can take that will help break down the task into manageable parts. Following this process is the easiest way to draft a successful essay, whatever its purpose might be.

According to Kathy Livingston’s Guide to Writing a Basic Essay , there are seven steps to writing a successful essay:

    1. Pick a topic.

You may have your topic assigned, or you may be given free reign to write on the subject of your choice. If you are given the topic, you should think about the type of paper that you want to produce. Should it be a general overview of the subject or a specific analysis? Narrow your focus if necessary.

If you have not been assigned a topic, you have a little more work to do. However, this opportunity also gives you the advantage to choose a subject that is interesting or relevant to you. First, define your purpose. Is your essay to inform or persuade?

Once you have determined the purpose, you will need to do some research on topics that you find intriguing. Think about your life. What is it that interests you? Jot these subjects down.

Finally, evaluate your options. If your goal is to educate, choose a subject that you have already studied. If your goal is to persuade, choose a subject that you are passionate about. Whatever the mission of the essay, make sure that you are interested in your topic.

    2. Prepare an outline or diagram of your ideas.

In order to write a successful essay, you must organize your thoughts. By taking what’s already in your head and putting it to paper, you are able to see connections and links between ideas more clearly. This structure serves as a foundation for your paper. Use either an outline or a diagram to jot down your ideas and organize them.

To create a diagram, write your topic in the middle of your page. Draw three to five lines branching off from this topic and write down your main ideas at the ends of these lines. Draw more lines off these main ideas and include any thoughts you may have on these ideas.

If you prefer to create an outline, write your topic at the top of the page. From there, begin to list your main ideas, leaving space under each one. In this space, make sure to list other smaller ideas that relate to each main idea. Doing this will allow you to see connections and will help you to write a more organized essay.

    3. Write your thesis statement.

Now that you have chosen a topic and sorted your ideas into relevant categories, you must create a thesis statement. Your thesis statement tells the reader the point of your essay . Look at your outline or diagram. What are the main ideas?

Your thesis statement will have two parts. The first part states the topic, and the second part states the point of the essay. For instance, if you were writing about Bill Clinton and his impact on the United States, an appropriate thesis statement would be, “Bill Clinton has impacted the future of our country through his two consecutive terms as United States President.”

Another example of a thesis statement is this one for the “Winning Characteristics” Scholarship essay: “During my high school career, I have exhibited several of the “Winning Characteristics,” including Communication Skills, Leadership Skills and Organization Skills, through my involvement in Student Government, National Honor Society, and a part-time job at Macy’s Department Store.”

    4. Write the body.

The body of your essay argues, explains or describes your topic. Each main idea that you wrote in your diagram or outline will become a separate section within the body of your essay.

Each body paragraph will have the same basic structure. Begin by writing one of your main ideas as the introductory sentence. Next, write each of your supporting ideas in sentence format, but leave three or four lines in between each point to come back and give detailed examples to back up your position. Fill in these spaces with relative information that will help link smaller ideas together.

    5. Write the introduction.

Now that you have developed your thesis and the overall body of your essay, you must write an introduction. The introduction should attract the reader’s attention and show the focus of your essay.

Begin with an attention grabber. You can use shocking information, dialogue, a story, a quote, or a simple summary of your topic. Whichever angle you choose, make sure that it ties in with your thesis statement, which will be included as the last sentence of your introduction.

    6. Write the conclusion.

The conclusion brings closure of the topic and sums up your overall ideas while providing a final perspective on your topic. Your conclusion should consist of three to five strong sentences. Simply review your main points and provide reinforcement of your thesis.

    7. Add the finishing touches.

After writing your conclusion, you might think that you have completed your essay. Wrong. Before you consider this a finished work, you must pay attention to all the small details.

Check the order of your paragraphs. Your strongest points should be the first and last paragraphs within the body, with the others falling in the middle. Also, make sure that your paragraph order makes sense. If your essay is describing a process, such as how to make a great chocolate cake, make sure that your paragraphs fall in the correct order.

Review the instructions for your essay, if applicable. Many teachers and scholarship forms follow different formats, and you must double check instructions to ensure that your essay is in the desired format.

Finally, review what you have written. Reread your paper and check to see if it makes sense. Make sure that sentence flow is smooth and add phrases to help connect thoughts or ideas. Check your essay for grammar and spelling mistakes.

Congratulations! You have just written a great essay.

    How-to

Tips, tricks, and hacks for the tech in your life.

Update May 10th 9:30AM ET: This article was originally published on March 6, 2018 and has been updated to include video.

Mobile spam calls have been a nuisance for years, but over the last few months, it’s felt to me like there’s been a surge of them. I get between four and six calls daily, and a quick survey of friends shows that I’m not alone. Every waking day brings with it a new barrage. Robocallers have upped their game by masking their spam with local, genuine-looking phone numbers. Sometimes their nonsense is amusing — like when you get a threatening voicemail about your impending arrest over owed back taxes — but the vast majority of the time, it’s an unwelcome distraction. It’s all too easy for these scammers to wield the power of the internet and fire off countless calls with ease. And once even just a few people fall for a scam, they’ve made enough profit to cover their trivial expenses.

Robocalls have become so infuriating that the Federal Trade Commission received over 375,000 complaints about them every month last year. The agency routinely says it’s doing its best to get a handle on the situation, and yes, there are occasionally significant crackdowns. But real-world feedback indicates that things are getting worse — not better — and it’s starting to feel a little out of control.

So if you’re as sick as I am of pulling a vibrating phone out of your pocket only to see a random, suspect number, let’s go over the options for fighting back and restoring some sense of peace.

First, I’ll review some definitions since the carriers make important distinctions between these calls — even if they’re all unwelcome and annoying. Here’s how Verizon looks at things:

    • Robocallers: Automated, prerecorded phone messages
    • Spammers: Unwanted callers that may be calling indiscriminately to a large number of recipients; sometimes includes callers to whom you’ve given consent to contact you
    • Fraud calls: An entity likely pretending to be someone they’re not with malicious intent

Option A: Block individual numbers one by one

This is probably a hopeless endeavor if you’re aiming to completely eradicate robocalls, but if there’s a particular number that keeps calling, it’s fairly easy to block it forever from your iPhone or Android phone.

On iOS, just go to the Phone app, then your Recents, and tap the blue information icon to the right of the number you want to block.

For Android, the process isn’t much different: go to the Recents section of the Phone app, long press on the bothersome number, and choose block. On some Android phones, you’ll also be given the option of reporting the number as spam.

Again, this will take a lot of persistent work on your part to keep the spammers away — and it’s good for absolutely nothing against blocked or private callers.

Option B: Trust (or pay) your carrier to protect you

Most of the major mobile providers have taken steps to insert themselves as a barrier between you and these annoying callers. Unfortunately, two of them make you pay an extra monthly fee for their effort.

    AT&T: Call Protect
Available for free for all postpaid customers. Unavailable on prepaid lines.

AT&T has a free app, Call Protect, that’s designed to block some fraudulent robocalls from reaching you, and you won’t have to do anything besides install the software on your phone. It won’t completely block spam or telemarketer calls, however; instead, Call Protect will identify those callers as “Suspected Spam” when the phone rings and give you the option of blocking their number in the future. Users can also manually block any numbers they’d like and report numbers to help improve the database.

The important caveats to know are that Call Protect is only available to postpaid customers; prepaid customers can’t use it at all. And the “Suspected Spam” feature only works in areas with AT&T HD Voice coverage. Also, the app is unable to block unknown callers altogether.

Download for iPhone | Download for Android

Sprint: Premium Caller ID ($2.99 / month)

If you’re willing to add an extra charge to your monthly bill, Sprint’s Premium Caller ID will identify spam callers and anyone not in your contacts list. It flags robocalls and spammers and assigns a “threat level” to give you an indication of how suspect the call might be.

But despite costing a premium, Sprint’s solution doesn’t automatically block anything from getting through. You can block future calls from a number or report it, but the best Premium Caller ID will do is make it clear that you shouldn’t answer. It won’t stop your phone from ringing, and all it takes is someone dialing *67 before your number to thwart it and show up as “Blocked” on your caller ID. Here’s an FAQ on the feature.

T-Mobile: Scam ID and Scam Block
Available for free for all postpaid customers.

T-Mobile includes two network-level layers of protection against robocallers, and both are free. Scam ID will identify known nuisance callers when your phone rings. It does that automatically without you having to install or sign up for anything.

You’ve got the option of enabling Scam Block to prevent those calls from ever popping up in the first place. To turn on Scam Block, dial #ONB# (#662#) from your T-Mobile phone. To disable it, just dial #OFB# (#632#). Like AT&T’s tool, T-Mobile will only prevent known scammers and fraud calls. Telemarketers and spam calls will still get through.

There’s also a third option, but it’s another that costs extra money. For $4 per month, you can subscribe to T-Mobile’s Name ID service. It can “identify any caller’s name and location and block any personal number, even if it’s not in your address book.” It also identifies organizations such as telemarketing agencies, political orgs, and survey callers. Name ID is included for free if you have a T-Mobile One Plus plan.

Verizon Wireless: Caller Name ID ($2.99 per month)

For no charge, you can block up to five phone numbers that you want to prevent from contacting you. However, blocks expire after 90 days and aren’t very helpful against robocallers with numbers that change every day.

If you really want to combat spammers, you’ll have to pay for Caller Name ID, which identifies suspected bunk calls and lets you block those numbers in the future or report them. A free 10-day trial is available to help you decide whether the extra monthly fee is worthwhile.

Option C: Protect yourself with third-party apps

There are a number of services such as Nomorobo, RoboKiller, Hiya, and others designed to prevent robocalls from ever ringing your phone. Most of them require a monthly (or annual) subscription. At their core, these services rely on a constantly updating list of robocallers, spammers, and fraudsters and use that database to stop nuisance calls. (When I say constantly updating, I mean they’re identifying thousands of bad numbers every day.) A call comes in, and the service runs it against that huge list of scam numbers. If it finds a match, the incoming call gets shut down before it reaches you.

All of them allow you to maintain your own personal blacklist of numbers that might be bothering you and whitelist those you want getting through. Some work by downloading a dedicated contacts list — separate from your regular contacts — to your phone. But both iOS and Android have recently given these services more leeway in taking control over your phone app and stopping the jerks from ever reaching you. On iPhone, you’ll have to enable them in the Settings app and give them caller ID permissions before they can start working. Apple shows you how to do that step-by-step right here .

I’d recommend looking into each of these services to see which one you like best. All of them are largely well-reviewed by customers, and all offer free trials to get started. One of these will ultimately be what you need to really fight back against the robocalls. It’s just a matter of finding your favorite.

    • Nomorobo : 14-day free trial. After that, $1.99 / month or $19.99 / year

Download for iPhone | Download for Android

    • RoboKiller : Free 7-day trial. After that, $2.99 / month or $24.99 / year

Download for iPhone | Coming to Android sometime in March

    • Hiya : Free. Hiya partners with Samsung, AT&T, and T-Mobile to provide their spam ID services and also has standalone apps.

Download for iPhone | Download for Android

    • TrueCaller : Free.

Download for iPhone | Download for Android

Option D: Buy a phone from Samsung or Google that automatically identifies spam callers

    Samsung

Samsung’s recent Galaxy S and Note smartphones automatically flag suspected spam calls right in the phone app as they come in. The company calls this feature Smart Call.

Same goes for the Google Pixel and Pixel 2, which turn the entire screen red as an easy “do not answer!” visual reference whenever a known spammer dials you up. These systems aren’t perfect; my Pixel 2 XL still gets fooled by plenty of numbers that look like local calls. Speaking of which…

Nuclear Option: Use Do Not Disturb to only allow calls from your contacts

On both Android and iOS, you can set each operating system’s Do Not Disturb mode to allow phone calls from only those people and businesses in your contacts list. This is a pretty drastic, sledgehammer solution to the problem of robocalls, and you’re almost certainly going to miss calls that you would’ve liked to have answered. But those calls will go through to voicemail, and then you can add that number to your contacts for the future. I’d still only recommend this option if you’re completely fed up, though, and only if you’re very good and meticulous about keeping contacts up to date.

Why do more and more spam calls look like they’re coming from a local number?!

It’s super annoying, isn’t it? It’s a trick called neighborhood spoofing, and RoboKiller has a good explainer on it here . In short, scammers think that a number matching your area code (and maybe even the first digits of your own number) will trick your brain and make you more likely to answer. And it makes their deception feel even more nefarious. What if it’s a family emergency? Maybe it’s your doctor’s office or the pharmacy?

Thankfully the robocall blocker apps have gotten better at spotting neighborhood spoofing. RoboKiller claims it’s been good at doing so since the beginning, and Nomorobo has also made detecting neighborhood spoofing a major focus.

Tip: Don’t forget to add yourself to the Do Not Call Registry

In theory, telemarketers are supposed to be honoring the National Do Not Call Registry . You can add yourself to the list by visiting www.donotcall.gov . The FTC says to allow 31 days for legitimate telemarketer sales calls to stop. Once you’ve signed up, your presence on the Do Not Call Registry never lapses or expires, contrary to some recent rumors. There’s no reason to renew or re-add your number to the list.

The Do Not Call Registry only covers sales calls. Charities, political groups, debt collectors, and surveys are still allowed to call you once you’ve signed up. Same goes for companies that you might’ve recently done business with. (You might be able to stop this specific case by verbally telling them to stop calling you.) Unfortunately, scammers / robocallers don’t pay the DNC Registry any mind and just ignore the thing entirely. The robots answer to no one, which will have you circling back to one of the solutions earlier in this article.

Tip: Never let the robots know you’re a real human

Tempting as might be to swear up and down at a robocaller or scammer, your best course of action is to leave them unsure as to whether they connected with an actual person. Don’t say anything. Don’t push buttons — even if the robotic voice says doing so will prevent further calls. Put no faith or trust in the robot voice. Either just let it go through to voicemail or hang up immediately if you mistakenly picked up.

Tip: Complain to the FTC… probably in vain

When all else fails and you’re consumed by despair and anger over the never-ending interruptions, you can always report callers to the Federal Trade Commission. They’re not going to pursue every individual complaint, but it’s certainly important to keep the commission aware of the magnitude of this problem. And as I said earlier, sometimes the FTC does actually take down some of these scammers.

If you have a method of eliminating robocalls that I haven’t listed here, definitely share it in the comments. It’s very disappointing to me that two of the major US carriers are charging their customers added fees just to help get spam calls under control. You’re already giving them plenty of money every month. I’m sure they’re doing a lot behind the scenes to detect mass robocalling operations and defend their networks against them, but peace and quiet ought to be included in your regular mobile bill.

Robocalls are the worst. That phony voice. The unstoppable message. At least you can get sassy with a telemarketer. Some robocalls are so convincing that you think you’re talking with an actual person, and they’re even programmed to respond to your voice.

Thanks in large part to advancing technology, robocalls are easier than ever to make. Here’s the shocker. It’s about to get worse.

According to an FTC report, here are the top six spam call types reported by consumers in 2017:

l Reducing your debt (credit cards, mortgage, student loans)

l Dropped call or no message

      l Vacation & timeshares

      l Warranties & protection plans

l Calls pretending to be government, businesses, or family and friends

      l Medical & prescriptions

So how do you shield yourself from these robocall and telemarketing scams?

I will warn you; this article is very comprehensive (read: long). It’s also one that you should most definitely share with your family and friends. You’re not alone cursing the endless stream of robocalls.

      Block individual numbers

A feature available on iPhone and Android, the ability to block specific numbers. Blocking numbers won’t stop every robocall and spammer number out there, but you can at least block the recurring ones.

iPhone: On an iPhone, open your Phone app >> Recents tab, tap the circular information icon on the right side of the number you want to block. On the next page, tap Block this Caller to prevent future incoming calls.

Android: On Android, you can likewise open your Phone app, navigate to the Recent section, do a long press on the suspicious number and select Block/report spam.

      Use do not disturb

Do Not Disturb is designed to block every number, except your most trusted contacts or favorites. This feature is also built into iPhone or Android phones. Unknown callers will always have the option to leave a voice message. You can also add any number to your Contacts list to let them through in the future.

iPhone: To customize your Do Not Disturb preferences on an iPhone, go to Settings >> Do Not Disturb. Here you can turn the mode on, set a Do Not Disturb schedule and set your allowed calls to either all your saved contacts or just your Favorites.

Android: On Android, go to Settings >> Sound (or Sound & Notification in other phones) then tap Do Not Disturb.

      Carrier tools

Major carriers have specific tools to identify, filter, and block suspected nuisance numbers from calling or texting your phone. Most require you to shell out an extra monthly fee to activate the caller ID service, but network-level blocking is free of charge across all the carriers.

AT&T: AT&T subscribers can use a free iOS and Android app called AT&T Call Protect. It has automatic fraud blocking, suspected spam warnings and you can also use it to manually block unwanted calls.

If you don’t have a smartphone, you can subscribe to AT&T’s Smart Limits. Once you’re signed up, log onto MyAT&T and hover over “Wireless” to see “Smart Limits.” Select it and then choose “Blocked Numbers” to add a number. It costs $5 a month for one line or $10 a month for up to 10 lines.

Verizon: If you have Verizon, you can temporarily block up to five numbers for 90 days for free. To add or edit your blocked numbers, just log into the MyVerizon website, go to the “My Plan & Services” tab, “Blocks” section.

The caveat is that after 90 days, you’ll have to manually block the numbers again. This service is also ineffective against number spoofs and robocallers who constantly change their numbers.

For better spam and robocall control on Verizon, you’ll have to get its Caller Name ID service. This will add automatic spam detection, spam blocks and caller details to your Verizon line. This costs $2.99 a month per line.

T-Mobile: T-Mobile provides two free ways to combat robocalls and spam calls. First is Scam ID, an automatic system that identifies spam numbers when your phone rings. T-Mobile automatically does this on its network; there’s no app to install or service to turn on.

The second free method is Scam Block. Unlike Scam ID, which simply identifies known spam numbers, Scam Block gives you an option to block those numbers. To turn this on, just dial #662# on your T-Mobile handset. To turn it off, dial #632#.

Sprint: Sprint customers can sign up for its Premium Caller ID service to protect themselves from robocalls and caller ID spoofers. This service is $2.99 a month.

      Third-party apps

Call blocking apps can identify who is calling you and also block unwanted calls that show up on a crowd-sourced spam and robocaller list. Here are the top call blocking apps you can use right now.

Nomorobo: Nomorobo is an iOS and Android app that offers real-time protection from a growing list of robocallers, telemarketers, and phone scammers.

Nomorobo lets the phone ring once and tries to identify the caller. If the number is on the Nomorobo list, the app will automatically block the call for you. Nomorobo is free to use for 30 days, after that it costs $1.99 per month or $19.99 for an entire year. Not all major cell carriers support Nomorobo.

Click here to learn more about Nomorobo and download it today.

Truecaller: Next is the free Truecaller app for iOS and Android. This service lets you find out who’s behind an unknown number. Just copy and paste the number into the search bar embedded in the app.

With a community-based spam list from over 250 million users, it’s a great resource to avoid answering an unwanted robocall.

The Truecaller app is free for both download and use. However, there is a professional version that can be bought as an in-app purchase and it costs $1.99 per month.

Click here for Truecaller download instructions.

But Hiya Caller ID & Block is the one to get

The Hiya Caller ID & Block app is perfect for identifying calls that you want to accept and blocking calls and texts you want to avoid. The app is free, with no ads, and is extremely simple to use. If you had to choose one, this is the best choice.

It allows you to block calls, blacklist unwanted phone numbers and text messages, reverse phone search incoming call information and receive spam alerts. The app is powered by a database of hundreds of millions of phone numbers confirmed to be spam by other users.

The Hiya app is available for free on both Apple and Android gadgets. Click here to download the app for iOS and Android.

      Auto-spam and robocall filtering

Did you know that some smartphones already have built-in spam and robocall protection in place? Samsung’s flagship Galaxy and Note smartphones have a native feature called Smart Call that automatically screens and flags suspicious numbers.

Google’s Android smartphones like the Pixel, Pixel 2, and even the old Nexus and Android One, also have built-in spam call protection.

      DNC Registry

In a perfect world, adding your number to the FTC’s National Do Not Call Registry should stop telemarketers from calling you. Technically, it’s illegal for telemarketers to call you if you are on this list.

Visit www.donotcall.gov/ and enter the landline or cellphone number you want on the list. Note that fax numbers are governed by different regulations, so signing them up won’t do anything.

After going through a quick email verification, you’re done. You can also call 1-888-382-1222 from any phone you want on the list.

      The most obvious solution

If you receive a call from an unknown number or one that doesn’t show up on caller ID, don’t answer. If it’s an important call, the person will leave a message and you can get back to them.

10 second runoff rule in college football

      Two-minute warning

In the National Football League (NFL), the two-minute warning is given when two minutes of game time remain on the game clock in each half of a game, i.e. near the end of the second and fourth quarters. [1] The suspension of play is two minutes long, the same as the short two-minute intermissions between quarters within each half. [2] There is an additional two-minute warning in the rare event only two minutes remain in an overtime period. However, in the postseason, where games continue indefinitely if there is no score, there is no two-minute warning in the first overtime, but if the second overtime, or any subsequent even overtime, is still tied with two minutes remaining (which has never happened), there will be a two-minute warning. If the football is in play when the clock reaches 2:00, the two-minute warning is called immediately after the play concludes, when the ball is declared dead . The two-minute warning stops the game clock in all cases.

      History[ edit ]

The origins are from the early years in the NFL when the official game time was kept by a member of the officiating crew, with the stadium clock being unofficial. Its purpose was a checkpoint to ensure that the teams knew how much time remained in the game. In the early 1960s the upstart American Football League made the stadium clock the official game time, a change followed later in the decade by the NFL. By then, television was an important factor in professional football, so the two-minute warning was retained as a commercial break and to serve as “tension building” time, and thus has become an important part of the game’s flow. [3]

      Rules[ edit ]

In addition to those practical purposes, gradually, some rules have evolved that are unique to the final two minutes of each half and overtime. There is no special event at the ends of the first and third quarters, aside from swapping end zones, so there is no two-minute warning then, only at the halves, except as implemented in Pro Bowls from 2014 to 2016.

The two-minute warning in the fourth quarter is an important milestone in the game for a team that is in the lead and looking to run out the clock . If the leading team has the ball on first down with less than two minutes to go in the game and the opposing team has no timeouts remaining, the quarterback can often safely end the game by taking a knee thrice consecutively without risking injuries or turnovers . This is because at the end of each play, the offensive team can take up to 40 seconds to start running the next play.

      10-second runoff[ edit ]

The following situations result in a 10-second game clock runoff if the team in possession of the ball is trailing or the game is tied and the team in possession of the ball has no timeouts remaining in that half. If there are 10 seconds or less left in the half or game, the half or game is ended by such runoff.

      • Excessive timeouts due to injuries ( see below )
      • Replay reviews in a situation where the clock would not have stopped without the review
      • One of the following six fouls is committed by the offense. Following the runoff, the game clock will resume again once the ball is set. The runoff can also occur if a team declines to use a timeout if it has timeouts remaining.
        • False start
        • Intentional grounding
        • Illegal forward pass beyond the line of scrimmage
        • Throwing a backwards pass out of bounds
        • Spiking or throwing the ball away after a down (unless after a touchdown)
        • Any other intentional act that causes the clock to stop

      Injuries[ edit ]

If a player is injured and his team has timeouts remaining in that half, a timeout is automatically charged to that team to allow the injured player to be removed from the field. If a team is out of timeouts, they are allowed an otherwise-excessive “fourth timeout”. However, to minimize the feigning of injuries to save game clock time, any subsequent injuries after the fourth timeout result in a five-yard penalty. In addition to an excessive timeout, there is a 10-second runoff (if it was an offensive player that was injured) or the play clock is reset to 40 seconds (if it was a defensive player).[ citation needed ]

Exceptions to the above include if the other team called a timeout immediately after the previous play to save time on the clock; the injury was caused by a foul by an opponent; or the previous play resulted in a change of possession, a successful field goal , or was a conversion attempt .[ citation needed ]

      Other rules[ edit ]

      • Within the two-minute warning period in the 1st half of the game, any restarting of the game following a timeout will happen with a scrimmage down . [2]
      • Within the two-minute warning period (of either half), instant replay reviews can only take place if the replay assistant, who sits in the press box and monitors the network broadcast of the game, determines that a play needs review. Coaches may not use a coach’s challenge.
      • Within the two-minute warning period (of either half), if a player fumbles the ball, any player on his team can recover the ball, but only the player who fumbled can advance it beyond the spot of the fumble. If any other player from the same team recovers the fumble downfield, the ball is spotted back at the point where it was initially fumbled. This rule also applies to the offense on fourth down at any point in the game, but applies to all downs after the two-minute warning. This rule was added for the 1979 season as a response to the September 1978 ” Holy Roller ” play.

      Other football leagues[ edit ]

The CFL has a three-minute warning , while the Arena Football League , and other indoor gridiron football leagues have a one-minute warning . [3]

NCAA Considering 10-Second Runoff For Penalties In Final Minute

After the fiasco with Tennessee at the end of the Music City Bowl against North Carolina, the NCAA is now considering a 10-second runoff if there is a penalty in the final minute of the game. If the rule had been in tact this past season, Tennessee would have more hardware in their trophy case.

The NCAA released a press release that said the following:

The opponent will have three options if the penalty is committed against it. It can take the yardage and the 10-second rundown; neglect the yardage and accept the 10-second rundown; or it can decline both.

“The idea is to prevent a team from gaining an advantage by committing a foul to stop the clock,” said Rogers Redding, who was recently named college football’s national officiating coordinator after serving for years as the SEC’s coordinator of football officials. Redding also is the secretary-rules editor for the NCAA’s football rules committee.

I agree. There is no way a team can profit from committing a penalty at the end of the game like that.
