Law School Gets Caught Lying About Its Above The Law Ranking

Don’t try to lie to Above the Law about how Above the Law rates your school.

I’ve got to give this law school credit for having stones. It’s one thing for law schools to lie or mislead prospective students about their employment numbers. It’s another thing for a law school to spin its U.S. News Law School Ranking in the most “positive” way it can think of.

But this law school here, these people just straight made up a number for its “Above the Law” ranking, as if somehow “Above the Law” wouldn’t notice! That’s some gumption, man. That’s like trying to adversely possess a house that is currently occupied. Good lord.

The school is telling prospective students that it ranks #77 on Above the Law’s employment rankings… which is interesting because Above the Law doesn’t DO an “employment ranking,” and our soon to be released law school rankings only go up to #50…

The second annual Above the Law Law School Rankings come out next week. Hold your deposits! Once again, we will break down schools based on their outcomes for graduates as opposed to the inputs from their entering classes. It should be fun.

Since we haven’t released the rankings yet, we didn’t expect to see anybody tout their Above the Law rank in a press release this week. But when has something as pedestrian as “facts” stopped a law school from saying what it wants? A concerned tipster forwarded this email he received from Nova Southeastern this morning:

Wut? Last year’s Above the Law rankings looked at only the top 50 schools. This year’s Above the Law rankings look at only the top 50 schools. There is no such thing as an Above the Law “Employment Rankings.” There is no such thing as an Above the Law rankings that is broken out by state. IS THERE SOME OTHER “ABOVE THE LAW” THAT RANKS LAW SCHOOLS THAT I AM NOT AWARE OF? Does Nova Southeastern rank #77 on Steven Seagal’s hit list?

And while we’re here: Nova Southereastern is also “Rank Not Published” by U.S. News, which means it is at best worse than #150. LST doesn’t produce a “ranking,” and NALP doesn’t produce a “ranking” — those organizations are opposed TO THE CONCEPT OF RANKINGS!

I honestly have no idea what Nova is talking about when it says: “Five rankings of law schools’ employment data were recently released.” If I edit that sentence for truth, it would look like this: “Five rankings of law schools’ employment data were recently released.”

The lesson, as always, is that you can NEVER BELIEVE the information you are getting from a law school. If you can’t independently verify every statistic, every line really, in a law school brochure or email, you have to simply ASSUME that it’s false. Law schools have no obligation to tell you the truth, the courts have said as much . Independently verifiable statistics, or it didn’t happen.

Let me put it like this: we caught Nova “red-handed” here, but let me point out the most important misleading part of the email. Nova says: “In today’s legal job market it makes good sense to value bar pass and employment data heavily in your decision of where to enroll. NSU Law has proven and consistent results in both.” Proven and consistent bar results, you say? Well, here’s the Daily Business Review’s report on Nova’s most recent bar passage results: “Nova’s passage rate dropped from 81.8 percent in September to 69.6 percent.”

The truth is out there, folks. It just doesn’t come on law school stationary.

Remind me how this is different than seemingly every law school “juking their stats” for U.S. News and World Report rankings?
I suppose lying directly to prospective students is a bit more pathetic than lying to the organization that compiles a list of schools determined by arbitrary factors in an attempt to save a dying print industry, however I would not be surprised if even the bicycle helmet and black tie crowd at BYU took liberties with their statistics this day in age.

Sadly, you can’t sue your law school if you are induced to enroll based on their lies. This is the natural consequence of being immune from suit.

When top-tier law students would tell me that they were worried about passing the bar, I used to say, “hey, 98% of the students in your class pass. Don’t you think the odds are good that you’re not one of the dumbest 2%?” But now I think a more comforting message will be, “69% of Nova Southeastern students pass the bar. You are speaking in complete sentences, so don’t you think you’re at least smarter than Nova’s dumbest 30%?”

  17. Guest says:
    April 24, 2014 at 10:47 PM

  22. Jackie Chiles says:
    April 25, 2014 at 5:20 PM

Interesting that Cooley’s bogus ranking system was even too much for a school that lies about its rankings to associate with.

  23. yodeling says:
    April 27, 2014 at 5:33 PM

In all fairness, part of the problem here is with Sturm’s Online Employment Rate Calculator, which I was able to find here: http://educatingtomorrowslawyers.du.edu/law-jobs/

BASED ON STURM’S CALCULATOR, I was able to verify the rankings that Nova Southeastern claims in their email. Now the fact that the calculator’s rankings don’t line up with the real rankings is an issue, and Nova’s email does nothing to help clarify that fact. But saying they made up the numbers is a little harsh. If anything, they had Sturm make up the numbers for them.

How to Connect Your iPhone or iPad to Your TV

Sometimes even a 10-inch screen is just too small. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to connect your iPhone or iPad to any recent TV for a bigger-screen media experience. Here’s our guide, from the simplest to the most complex solutions.

    Connect With a Cable

By far, the simplest way to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV is to use a cable like Apple’s Digital AV Adapter, which connects your Apple device to your TV’s HDMI port. You’ll also need a standard HDMI cable— any one will do , so just buy the least expensive one you can find.

Apple's Digital AV Adapter There are two models of the Digital AV Adapter, so make sure you choose the right version. The $49 one is for current iOS devices with a Lightning port (pictured); the other ($39) is for older iOS devices with 30-pin ports .

Connect your iPhone or iPad and TV with the cable, and switch the TV’s input to the port with the cable. Also plug the USB end of your Lightning cable into the adapter and plug the other end into a power outlet—it needs juice to play. Your TV will become a duplicate of the connected device’s screen in 1080p HD. Now you can play your iTunes videos, Netflix movies, or whatever else you want on your TV

There are many third-party Lightning-to-HDMI cables for sale for around $15 to $25—and they include the HDMI plug into the TV. Just search Amazon for “lightning to HDMI” for a sampling. They come from companies you’ve never heard of with names like Mostop, Ayshone, Wesoo, Innens, Tessin, and RayCue, to name a few; this Hiotech Lightning to HDMI Cable is $15.99. These cables are not only a better value, they’re easier to connect than Apple’s solution.

One big caveat with those third-party cables, though: if you’re looking to watch streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO, or on-demand video from providers like Comcast Xfinity and DirecTV, most of these cables won’t work. They lack High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which prevents pirates from capturing high-def digital content for their own use. HBO Now has a nice primer on how it supports HDCP .

    Connect With Apple TV

Maybe you don’t want a pesky wire between your iPhone and your TV. The easiest way to connect wirelessly is with Apple’s own media hub/extender, Apple TV .

Once your Apple TV is set up, make sure it’s connected to the same home Wi-Fi network as your iPhone or iPad. Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone or iPad’s screen to launch Control Center, tap AirPlay Mirroring, then select your Apple TV. Your Apple TV will start streaming a mirror of whatever’s on your iDevice’s screen. (You can also just use AirPlay to stream media from the iPhone to the TV, such as music or videos you’ve purchased on iTunes.)

    AirplayMirroring

One warning: In very crowded Wi-Fi environments, AirPlay video might break up or stutter. In that case, use a cable. But it should be fine for most homes.

    Connect With a DLNA App

If you have an internet-enabled TV, it probably supports DLNA, a generic form of media streaming available on many different manufacturers’ products. With the right app, you can stream unprotected music and video file—in other words, files you have stored in iTunes and copied to your iPhone; it won’t work with music and videos purchased from the iTunes Store due to Digital Rights Management (DRM) limitations.

However, you’re not limited to streaming media only from the iPhone—the right app will look at media stored on other devices, like your PC, and act as a go-between to set up streaming from PC to TV, for example. Devices you can stream to include not only TVs but also game consoles and PCs. You don’t have to convert any videos or install special codecs to make it work.

MCPlayer HD from Arkuda Digital is available for $4.99; a free lite version limits you to playing five videos per folder.

If your TV doesn’t show up on the list, you may need to activate its DLNA function. Go to the TV’s internet connection menu and look for an option to stream from a PC or home server. That’s DLNA.

Sunshine is another option—install a version of the app on all devices so you can easily share non-DRM media between them; it will also help you cast media to the TV (but doesn’t do mirroring, so there is no watching streaming video apps

Connect With an Android TV Stick or Chromecast

There are more arcane, hackerish ways to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV. For instance, you can get an Android-powered TV stick, plug it into the back of your TV, install the Kodi media server app (once known as XBMC), and the stick will be able to play unprotected music and video from the built-in apps on your device by using the AirPlay button. It won’t support screen mirroring or protected video streaming.

In my experience, though, this approach is typically a nightmare. The sticks are slow, buggy, and unreliable, and Kodi support tends to break. Here’s a hint about what a pain they are: one review includes the phrase, “Once we downloaded an updated version of the device’s official firmware from geekbuying.com and flashed the MK808B.”

While this is definitely a way to save money over an Apple TV (and the stick can run any Android app on your TV, which is cool), what’s your time worth? Probably more than the $50 difference.

Google Cast Icon A better bet is the Google Chromecast or Chromecast Ultra . Each is a simple, inexpensive dongle that easily plugs into a TV’s HDMI port—the Ultra supports 4K and Ethernet connections. Your iPhone screen can’t be mirrored on the TV screen over a Chromecast, but for video streaming, there is the option to use your iPhone to navigate the streaming media apps that Chromecast supports. Your iPhone becomes a remote control for Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and others (but not Apple or Amazon—Chromecast doesn’t have them).

To be honest, you can do this within many apps on iPhone to almost any DLNA device that has the same apps installed—I do it with my Samsung SmartTV and Xbox One all the time. Just look for the Cast icon (above) in each app to get started.

Top 5 Apps to Mirror iPhone to iPad

By Adam Cash | Dec 26,2017 20:03 pm

Most iOS users prefer iPad because of its larger screen size. It will be more convenient to share your iPhone contents with friends or family members on iPad. In this way, you need to mirror iPhone to iPad. In this article, we focus on the best software that can help you mirror iPhone to iPad or PC/Mac with ease.

    airplay

    1# AirPlay

This is a built-in feature on most iOS devices. It supports iPhone to iPad screen share and allows you to stream music, video, and photos to Apple TV, as well as Music streaming to Airport Express and Airplay-enabled speakers. To stream content on iPhone to iPad, all you need is an iPhone 4/4S or later and iPad, iPad Mini, iPad 2 or later.

Mirroring iPhone to iPad with Airplay is a simple process. Simply connect your iPhone and iPad to the same Wi-Fi network and then swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone’s and iPad’s screen so as to open the Control panel. Tap on Airplay and then tap on the iOS devices you want to connect to from the Airplay list.

    Pros:

    • While streaming content between iOS devices, users can still use their Apple mobile devices to play games, check emails, update Facebook status and do other things.
    • When it is used with Apple TV, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch becomes a handheld remote control.
    • The system works perfectly and does not involve complicated configurations.

    Cons:

    • You must have an internet connection to stream iTunes content.

    mirriring assist

    2# Mirroring Assist

Mirroring Assist enables users to share their iOS screen to Android phones, Fire TV and tablets via AirPlay. It’s what you need to display iPhone on iPad with ease. The software can help you teach, play games, present, watch movies and so much more. Mirroring Assist can be used to push music on iTunes to Android devices, push videos from iPhone to iPad, or from an iPhone and iPad to large screen Android TVs. It supports iOS 6 or later.

    Pros:

    • It is perfect for demonstrating how iOS apps work to your friends and families.
    • The software is also available for Mac and Windows devices.
    • You even can use it to showcase iOS games on Android.

    Cons:

    • Users have reported that the software is slow and crashes constantly.

    reflector

    3# Reflector 2/Reflector Director

Reflector 2 is a wireless mirroring and streaming receiver that works with AirPlay, Google Cast, and AirParrot. You don’t have to install anything so as to use it. This is what you need to share movies, play games, present or demo how applications work from your iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The software can show iPhone on iPad perfectly, in this way, you can mirror iphone to ipad.

    Pros:

    • It is designed with security options that prevent unwanted connections and also restricts access to only those who should be mirroring.
    • Users can record their screens at up to 60 fps.
    • Once you have installed it, you are only required to connect to Reflector and then mirroring begins.

    Cons:

    • The software is a little bit expensive.

    x-mirage

    4# X-Mirage

X-Mirage is an excellent AirPlay server for both Mac and Windows PC’s that enables users to wirelessly stream various types of contents or mirror their iPad, iPhones and iPods screen to Windows/Mac PCs. Apps, games, videos, photos, presentations, websites and more, are perfectly mirrored on a bigger screen.

    Pros:

    • You can record the screen as well as audio devices from any iOS device, with just one click.
    • The software receives the AirPlay contents in full HD 1080p high-definition.
    • Users can create AirPlay password protection, to prevent unauthorized users from using the software.

    Cons:

    • You have to purchase the software in order to enjoy all its benefits.

    itools

    5# iTools

iTools is a powerful software that allows you to mirror iPhone, iPad and iPod to your screen for free. Unlike the wireless software, iTools lets you tether your devices to a computer through USB cables so as to mirror your devices. Finding the mirroring option is somehow hidden as the software is programmed for so much more.

    Pros:

    • You will not be worried about Wi-Fi network compatibility because mirroring doesn’t go through Wi-Fi.
    • It doesn’t need special cables to mirror the Apple devices to a computer.
    • The software is available for free download.

    Cons:

    • Users have complained that the Apple device’s screen displayed on the computer isn’t big enough for viewing contents comfortably.

    A Message from Our Superintendent

Greetings to the Bellwood School District 88 Community:

First off, I would like to thank everyone within the Bellwood School District 88 education community for the tremendous support provided in the 2017-2018 school year. It is vitally important that we understand the importance of the support needed in order for a school district to be sustainable and productive. In the upcoming school year, we look forward to taking our school district to higher heights, knowing that we have the support of all vested stakeholders. With that said, we will continue to maximize the use of resources to ensure that students’ success remains our top priority.

In a moment of reflection, I would like to take this opportunity to share a few formidable things accomplished in the 2017-2018 school year. For starters, we were able to balance the budget and obtain a positive credit rating. With our fiscal affairs in order, this afforded us the ability to provide multiple resources to our students and staff such as instructional supplies and materials, new textbooks, and access to updated technology. One major focal point was to redevelop our network infrastructure so that our students would be able to have a more wholesome learning environment free from internet disruptions. We procured laptops for teachers and updated student Chromebooks and computer labs in all schools. We will incorporate new technologies such as the interactive panels and projectors in the 2018-2019 school year, as well as a new peripheral security system outside all of our school buildings. Student safety comes first!

High quality teaching and learning continue to be a most important consideration with regards to academic success. Our kindergarten students will be utilizing a new curriculum, SuperKIDS, which will give them the foundational skills necessary to become ferocious readers! We piloted this program last school year, and we were able to witness first-hand the benefits of the program. We have also engaged in a partnership with Proviso Township High Schools. With the onset of this partnership and this new innovative program, our eighth grade students will now be able to take Algebra I at Proviso West High School. Upon completion, they will receive high school credit and be able to move to more advanced math courses when they enter high school.

I am very proud to be a member of the Bellwood community and its school system. Browse our website and learn more about who we are and what we do. If you would like to visit with me personally, my door is almost always open.

I’ll see you in the halls!

    Sincerely,

    Mark Holder

    Mark Anthony Holder, Ed.S.
    Superintendent
